Here at the Trust, we’re on a mission to make sure that every one of our volunteers gets the experience they want. The commitment and passion it takes for someone to donate their time to something they believe in is a testament to their character.
RepairED Just Sew Session
Current opportunities:

We’re running Repair Cafés where people can drop in to learn how to mend and repair their items. By maintaining our clothes, electronics and items, we are preventing waste from going into landfills and contributing a more circular and sustainable economy.
We are looking for volunteers who are knowledgeable about repairing electronics and mending clothes. You could be good with gadgets, know your way around a broken toaster or handy with pulling apart a computer.
Maybe you're handy with a sewing machine, know how to darn a sock or are a wizz at upcycling!

Love the thought of keeping waste out of landfill? Do you find yourself sorting the recycling a work/school/homes? Want to know about e-waste and how it gets redistributed?
We are looking for people to volunteer at our Te Aro Zero Waste Centre; to help people recycle right, collect e-waste, curtains and other items, and give out sustainability advice.

Love the thought of a cleaner greener Wellington - keeping rubbish out of our streets and waterways? Love working with our Welly communities, meeting new people and sorting waste?
We are looking for people to volunteer with our Climate Action Educator during the Community Street Clean every third Wednesday of the month for 3 - 4 hours.
Tasks include set up, meeting and greeting the supporting community groups and individuals, collecting rubbish from Welly streets, sorting and recording the collected rubbish, packing down.

We need people to help us curate curtain orders, prepare curtain tracks, sort preloved curtains, box up orders to go out, and we have 5 spots available for those folks who feel confident sewing.
If you're available Monday to Friday between the hours of 8.30 and 4.30pm we would love to hear from you (volunteer time slots are flexible).
You don’t need to have used an industrial machine before because we can show you the ropes, plus you’ll be join in team of social and friendly volunteers.

Introducing some of our awesome volunteer community
Mirei was with us for 5 months, attracted by the opportunity to talk with people. Coming from Nagoya in Japan, she studied at Vic Uni for 8 months.
A friendly face welcoming people into our space, Mirei helped with everything from plastic lid recycling to waste data tracking. She loved a coffee and a chat and said the café culture and nature in the city was what she has loved about Pōneke.
Mirei said the volunteering gave her lots of new knowledge and has made her more curious about how recycling and sustainability is addressed in Japan. We were sad to say goodbye but we’re stoked she wants to work in sustainability now her studies are finished.

Liv was from Halifax Canada, and swapped 12 weeks of winter as a Business Student for a summer as a sustainability intern where she found herself fully in the world of reusable serviceware.
Liv worked directly with Ali, our Operations Manager on FillGood, which is eliminating disposable serviceware from city events. Liv helped us get the iniative off the ground in the early stages; working hands on with the operational logistics of our reuse system and successfully completing the New Zealand Arts Fest pilot.

Ngaio LOVES fabric. She found out about the Trust while shopping for William Morris fabric on TradeMe. Long story short, she picked up her purchase from us, took a bit of a tour and promptly put her hand up to volunteer at the Curtain Bank. This was eight years ago. Since then she's learnt how to use a commercial sewing machine (thanks Juliet!) and has woven herself into the fabric of the Curtain Bank community.
She really enjoys the natter, how helpful everyone is with everything, the bottomless biscuit tin, and of course, being surrounded by such a large variety of fabric. At the risk of sounding corny (her words) "the people are the best thing about volunteering at the Trust".
Felipe was a student intern with Toast Electric for his Vic Uni master's and worked closely with our Fair Energy Manager Phil. He was able to statistically show that, on average, all the Energy Wellbeing clients used more power over winter while paying less in power bills before and after joining the program. Exactly the outcome we want for our clients.
“Working with people who constantly struggle to adequately power their homes and being able to provide some relief from these issues is extremely gratifying and the reason I choose to study and work in sustainability and climate change issues. ..The time was probably the most informative, educating, and important university experience I have had in 5 years of studying.”
